Rockville Centre is a village in the southwestern part of Hempstead on the South Shore of Long Island. The area of Rockville Centre along with East Rockaway, Oceanside, and Lynbrook was known as New Rockaway a village of the Reckouackie Indian Tribe. The community was named in honor of Mordecai Rock Smith who was a Methodist preacher as well as being a farmer, blacksmith, justice of peace, and owning a local mill. The area grew very slowly until the construction of the DeMott’s Mill at which time the area became a commercial center. From that time forward, Rockville Centre grew larger with real estate developments.
The area is served by the Rockville Centre Public School District which offers 5 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. However, a small percentage of residents are served by the Oceanside School District and the Baldwin School District. Rockville Centre is also home to the Molloy College offering a Division II Athletic Program, forty clubs and organizations. The attractions in the area are the playgrounds, athletic fields, and public parks that surpass 150 acres
